About Jonathan
Jonathan is a solicitor and mariner in the Admiralty and Crisis Management team of the firm’s Shipping Group. He advises on high profile complex litigation arising from marine and offshore energy casualties, including collisions, groundings, salvage/wreck removal, fires, total loss, and limitation and jurisdiction issues. He also has significant marine and energy insurance experience. He has extensive arbitration, High Court and Court of Appeal experience, and acted for the Republic of South Africa in a dispute over £32 million of silver bars salvaged from a vessel sunk in the Indian Ocean during World War Two, which went all the way to the Supreme Court. The latter case generated significant media interest and resulted in Jonathan being The Times’ Lawyer of the Week.
Prior to becoming a solicitor, Jonathan was an officer in the Royal Navy for 18 years and served at sea in frigates and destroyers throughout the world. He was command qualified (the Navy’s equivalent to the Master Mariner qualification) and as a Specialist Navigation Officer on the staff of Flag Officer Sea Training, he was responsible for training warship navigating officers and captains prior to their deployment on global operations. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Navigation and is also BOSIET and MIST certified, allowing him to travel offshore.
In addition to being a solicitor he is one of the Firm’s casualty investigators and has attended numerous casualties in the immediate aftermath of incidents to collect evidence and logistical support.
The Lawyer named Jonathan as one of its “Hot 100 Lawyers” for 2025 and a “rising star”.
Jonathan is qualified in England and Wales.
