We have fantastic people and clients. We have also been in the vanguard of finding legal solutions and creating new law to support our clients. Every day I see our talented people finding solutions to issues our clients have – either that they are aware of or may become an issue in the future.
We are nothing without our people and being able to attract fantastic support is the key. Seeing the success of those who have sat with me as trainees, some of whom are now successful equity partners, has been an incredibly rewarding aspect of being trusted to mentor upcoming talent in my role as a partner.
In shipping my aim is to listen to everyone and make their role as positive and inclusive as possible. Each time I talk about the history of the firm and our continued leadership of shipping I feel incredibly proud to be a partner here. It is like being part of a large and growing family.
HFW is a place where new ideas are encouraged, talent is nurtured and is increasingly highly prized. We take our work seriously but (on the whole) not ourselves seriously. We are proud of our history and the work we produce.
Partners are encouraged to find their own path, including developing and delivering niche service lines. I have been exposed to complex and challenging cases, some of which have involved setting new precedent. All of our cases need to be geared to ensure a range of experience and skillsets in order to provide an efficient client service – the system does not work unless everyone is invested in training, developing and collaborating with each other.
We have really talented junior lawyers and business service team members who in addition to excelling at their work are genuinely nice to be around. I take pride in nurturing talent and have particularly enjoyed being part of the newly qualified solicitors assessments and more latterly, the nomination committee for new partners and legal directors.
Clients are at the centre of everything we do. We are fully focused on providing a first class results driven service in which the client feels valued.
Lawyers have direct access to working with partners on sophisticated matters regardless of seniority. Juniors are given a great deal of responsibility from day one and full carriage of matters if they are willing to step up.
Working with colleagues from HFW’s global network has been a highly rewarding experience. I have had the opportunity to work with not only the Australian offices but also the London, Singapore and Hong Kong offices to name a few.
Coming from a Chinese background, Chinese New Year is an integral part of my culture. In a global firm like HFW, celebrating Chinese New Year in the workplace creates opportunities for colleagues from distinct backgrounds to learn more about a particular culture and its traditions. This is especially important for a firm that values diversity and has a strong presence in a multicultural society like Australia.
