Guest speaker Dr Donna Brunero will share some insights into Singapore's pre-1819 maritime history. In doing so she will explore ideas relating to regional trade, contested waterways and understandings of maritime violence; all factors that played a role in shaping the character of early modern Singapore. Some questions she'll address include:
- Why were the waters surrounding Singapore hotly contested in the 1600s?
- What was the history of this island prior to 1819 and the arrival of Raffles?
- And why, after the settlement of a trading centre on this island, did early trading communities in Singapore constantly appeal for protection against ‘piratical peoples’?
